4 - Year Terms
Tonight the council will be presented with a petition from citizens regarding the desire to change the terms of office for Mayor from two years to four years and aldermen from two years concurrent terms to four years staggered. If the council is presented with a valid petition the council is required by law to submit the issue to a vote. An election must be held within 60 days after the petition is received.
I will comment with my concerns and ideas on this issue at tonight’s Committee of the Whole. I will then type my thoughts after tonight’s meeting. I wanted to give everyone an opportunity to comment.

I think 4 year terms are an excellant idea. It is bad for the city when we have an election that turns the majority of the council. It takes a good year for aldermen to learn their job and become productive rather that reactionists. The second year is always about running for another term. If you follow the meetings the second year the aldermen start to comment on every issue and make long drawn out speeches. I think it would also help those who are not supported by political pacs to build a grass roots orignazation.
I know the audio system was having some problems when I first spoke on this issue. I am in full support of the voters having the opportunity to voice thier opinions on this issue.
Some concerns I have is the cost of a special election rather than having it on the ballet in November, the low voter turnout when the mayor is not running and the luxury of even ward Alderman to run for mayor and still hold thier Aldermanic positions if they lose.
These are just some ideas to think about. I welcome your ideas.

Are you saying if your not good enough to be mayor, you shouldn't be able to be an alderman? I guess I don't see your point. Senators run for president and lose, and then go back to being senators.
I think it is a horrible idea. I was initially for it, but after this election I shouldn't have to wait 4 years to vote out someone like Winborn. Clearly a misguided voter error.
Funny you would say that. I also was initially for it (before the last election), but now with the people on the council (Hammerlink, Van Fossen, Ambrose, Meyers, Lynn) I can't imagine 4 years of that!!
