Graffiti
I have noticed a number of cites with recent graffiti markings. If you see any please send me an email at shawn@hamerlinck.us or call 563-529-4857. I think the sooner we can paint over it the easier we can keep it from spreading.

Dirty White Boy here ...
I took a tour of the graffiti situation in the West and Central part of Davenport this past weekend. As a former resident of the West End, I had forgotten how different life is in that part of the city. A current resident took me through neighborhoods where there were guard dogs. These "guard dogs" were two-legged and carried pistols and took turns working a shift protecting property from thieves, gang members and who ever did not belong. On my tour, the resident pointed out posted gang markers that establish boundaries or territories. Recently a whole lot of gang graffiti had been painted over, but within two or three days the graffiti was back. The resident said that the cops and the city council have no idea in what they are dealing with as far as the gangs. He stated that you will never stop the graffiti. He said that if you were smart, you would have the police concentrate some extra manpower in the areas right after the graffiti is painted over. Those first couple of nights after the paint-over, you probably could catch some of the gang guys painting and re establishing their territory. Here is a sampling of addresses where graffiti is back full strength:
1st & Howell St. / White house on Northeast corner is heavily posted.
Alley behind 3rd and Howell St. / East
Behind 1436 3rd Street
Behind the blue metal building at 1735 3rd Street.
The Roederer Transfer and Storage building and area of 6th and Fillmore Street.
My guide and other residents I talked to did not have much faith in the city council and their Aldermen Meyer and Van Fossen. They were aware of you and the reputation you were building as a hard worker for the citizens but wondered if you could do anything since you are in 2nd ward. Would you be interested in talking with me about this situation if I would call you?

Dirty White Boy:
I think the neighbor you spoke with has a great idea. I have also sent a copy of these addresses Bladel to make sure we are paying attention to these areas. You and anyone else who has a question can give me a ring at 563-529-4857 anytime. I do not mean to be rude if it takes me half a day to get back to you.
Thanks for the questions and comments

DWB coming at you again. The graffiti has been painted over again right away. I assume you had something to do with this. I will check these sites again this weekend to see if the taggers have been back. Will let you know.
The gas station at 46th and Pine that was just covered over has new markings on the bathroom door, south side of the building. 2) Old Geifman grocery at Kimberly and Division recently painted over has new markings on the east side of the building. 3) Walgreens, at Kimberly and Division, a large green box on the west side of the building (Looks like an electrical or phone junction box) has fresh banger spraypainting on it. 4) The railroad overpass at Divison and 5th. (I've turned that into United Neighbors twice with no response) Those markings have been on the tressel since last halloween.

Thanks for the list. I will check these out and report them again. We need to find a way to catch those who are doing the graffiti rather than playing a game with them by painting these buildings white and creating new canvases. I have said that I am not big on cameras but we need another option.
